There, Shokichi, now a harried salaryman riding the trains, stumbles across the remnants of his fellow tanuki making merry in a field. Tanuki have a long-standing position in Japanese folklore, and much of it revolves around their magic ball … To some, it might feel off-putting, but I found it to be incredibly original, zany and different. So starts a struggle over many years to try and transform into all manner of things in order to scare off the human menace.If you haven’t seen Pom Poko, this is sort of a hard concept to explain. All I'm saying is that it doesn't work. Here, we see the raccoons use their testicles as a means of transformation, making everything from mats to sit on, to large spheres of death for a ball bombing attack at the end. He is voiced by Makoto Nonomura in Japanese and Jonathan Taylor Thomas in English. It’s a heartfelt moment and I love seeing both human and raccoon alike tear up over seeing family members who are no longer with them. Luckily, raccoons are skilled in the ancient art of transformation and simply need a refresher course. Once in a while, despite being in the age of spoilers, trailers, and general internet nonsense, we get the rare chance to watch a film which we know absolutely nothing about.

The story of Pom Poko is told via narration and falls into the structure of a history-epic. In a way, this almost feels like Animal Farm. Yeah, the one with the tanuki balls. The two find themselves at a head by the end when Gonta leads a war party to fight the humans. The company's logo features the character *Totoro* (a large forest spirit) from Hayao Miyazaki's film *"My Neighbor Totoro"*. 111 notes. Pom Poko is a 1994 Japanese animated comedy-drama fantasy film directed by Isao Takahata, animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Hakuhodo, and distributed by Toho. And with some of the stuff that's in other Ghibli movies, that is saying a lot.It has a diiferent feel than other Ghibli films, but that's Takahata for you; never one to deliver the expected. I love pom poko! I didn’t even know it was about raccoons until the opening scene. And in the Kamakura period goldsmiths used Tanuki scrotum to hammer gold into gold leaf because the skin could be stretched out so far.I stated that I understand that all of it is part of Japanese legend and tradition. In the end, the raccoons admit defeat but transform the land one last time so that they and the humans can see the past that can never be again. Shoukichi wants a more peaceful resolution.

I just feel that Pom Poko is a bad movie that relies on an absurd concept for any enjoyment.I have to agree though, it's easily my least favorite Ghibli film as well (and I've seen 15 so far).
