Here’s the problem...I/we don’t don’t want to be a noise level statistical write off. I was (and still am) very fond of such diverse cinematic fare as: “Mary Poppins,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “My Fair Lady,” “Alfie,” “Too Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Graduate,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” and the subject of this review: “Doctor Zhivago.”

Perhaps it's simply the age of the film--techniques in storytelling have changed over the decades--but I felt strangely distant from the character of Yuri Zhivago. The World War II phase of the career of controversial American general David Lean's Doctor Zhivago is a fine and stirring epic which has stood the test of time. Yuri, however, ends up marrying his cousin, Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin).

Lean's direction faithfully follows Boris Pasternak's novel and preserves the original story better than any other film or TV adaptation that has ever followed.
