I am so glad I found this book at the library. One element that got me so hookI really enjoyed this book. She has several family members living in the United States, but now very few living with her and her family. Yes, Alvarez wrote this as a novel, but it does have some of the Dominican Republic's political history in it. The book referenced important historical figures such as the Butterfly sisters and El Jefe. A YA book about living under the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic.This made me think of my father and my grandparents. I really enjoyed this book.

A story of a girl Anita and her family during the dictatorship of Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo and their fight for freedom and the losses they incurred in getting it.It was really good, I read it a while ago, so I don't really remember all the details, but from what I do it was fantastic!A story of courage even through the eyes of a young woman. Being an adolescant, she is out of the loop on most of what is happening around her, no one informs her of anything and she is told not to ask questions. It simply states, "for those who stayed". Some of the techniques listed in Before We Were Free may require a sound knowledge of Hypnosis, users are advised to either leave those sections or must have a basic understanding of the subject before practicing them.Loved each and every part of this book. She and her whole family are all Dominican Republican. She is a young Dominican Republican pre-teen girl. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn more about the Dominican Republic and the time where they weren’t free from the dictator El Jefe, and someone who just can’t find a book to read like myself and wants something interesting and that will get your attention. Ms. Alvarez currently resides in Middlebury, Vermont, but was born and raised in the Dominican Republic.
