i test drive a focus st 2016 before buying my touring, dealer told me in test drive that the turbo icon in the focus dash that read -10 +20lbs ( turbo boost) was the G-force when taking curves and accelerating , i was lmao inside of me .... i got the hell out of there.

Anyone have advice on here?

It's useful for going up hills (car might get confused if you're going fast uphill, and shift to a high gear) or accelerating quickly when merging onto the highway from a slow on-ramp (low gear = higher revs = faster acceleration). From what i've understood from my research, the "3, 2, 1" in an automatic transmission just prevents the car from shifting to a higher gear than that.So if i set the transmission to "2" the car wont upshift into 3rd or 4th gear. This is apparently useful for when you are towing something/going up long inclines so the car doesn't overtax itself, or when in icy conditions, when you don't want the car going into high gear.I was never taught this, so i had no clue until i did some research. In most cars with a computer the setting is just a suggestion, what you would What i COULD NOT find, was information on whether it was safe to shift down into the other gears while the car is in motion.I just tried this out yesterday with my Jeep, holy shit at going down a steep hill with no brakes required!New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be castReference questions answered here.
Granted, this depends on the vehicle - your manual should tell you what the gear settings actually do.I have an automatic 2008 Mazda3. No.

Accord v6 coupe is my first car, and I am still playing with the transmission and paddle shifter. I read the manual, but nothing on it say if I can shift between D and S mode while driving.

One dealer I test drove at said the S was for 'Second'. 4 years ago. Sometimes I am in traffic and want to get around someone quickly so I shift from D to S. I notice the engine revs generally higher and Ive read S just spools up the turbo up quicker. One dealer I test drove at said the S was for 'Second'. Honda has become a software company that also sells cars.

since the D or fourth gear is suitable for highway cruising, locking it up on D3 in and around town is the best practice.

You should not shift between R, N, P, or D while moving (it can damage the car), so it's a legitimate question.

If you slow down, it will shift down to second or first as necessary. I have a 2016 Honda Civic 1.5 Turbo. revving the engine at high speed with very low wheel spinning, to provide maximum torque up hills and such. Not to be a party pooper, but the body can sustain 20 G's for as long as 10 seconds before you black out...

Not much different than just flooring it anyway...I switch between D,S,L all the time.

I asked the dealership if it was bad for the Engine/CVT if i switch modes WHILE i'm driving but no one could answer the question. It doesn't change ratios. You'll also find you can do it without pushing the button (if your shifter has one). This depends on the car - often you'll have a D3 which shifts between the lowest three gears, and sometimes the 2 and the 1 lock it in that gear (that is, 2 is always 2, it doesn't shift between 2 and 1).

Knowing that this is electronic, I've often wondered if it was possible to raise this shift point?I understand that i shouldn't do it if i'm going like 65. So put it in 2 and it'll only use 1st and 2nd, etc. Unless we're talking some kind of As for OP's question...based on my dubious understanding of the question (see above) I know that its manufacturer specific. One dealer I test drove at said the S was for 'Second'. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. Yes you can.
Newer cars may just wait until you've slowed down enough (because they're electronic, not mechanical). Hello accord expert.

does driving those harm, and specially shifting to D3 or D2 while driving on D. or you could only change shift when the car comes to complete stop. I asked the dealership if it was bad for the Engine/CVT if i switch modes WHILE i'm driving but no one could answer the question. In any modern car with multiple driving modes the change in modes is managed by the vehicle’s electronic control unit(s). you know how automatic cars get D and then D3, D2, and D1? If overdrive is on, it won't shift above third gear.

It will never go into 1st until it slows to a certain speed.. which is never soon enough for me. Sometimes I am in traffic and want to get around someone quickly so I shift from D to S. I notice the engine revs generally higher and Ive read S just spools up the turbo up quicker.

older cars will either rev like crazy or block you from putting in 2 or 1 if you're going too fast. Ill switch into S when passing and then switch back to D because the car seems to maintain the higher speed in D longer than it does in S. I have no idea if this will cause any problems later down the line, but this is the reason I lease cars.
