Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 7, 2009. There is too much emotion, imagery, involved narrative. I spent about an hour trying to fix this, and ultimately gave up because despite all my attempts and efforts, nothing solved the issue. But at times the feminist in me just wanted to shake certain characters, and whilst I'm certainly no stranger to magical realism, having grown up on the ley lines of Glastonbury, some of the scenarios we encounter as readers are more than a little far fetched! We were not disappointed! Number one all time favorite movie! It also only really touches on the political history that it is meant to run along side which is a shame. So, my library had the video, checked it out, and absolutely LOVED the movie. So glad I saw it was a deal of the day today, and I bought it, so when traveling and want to read it, I can. When my oldest daughter was in 7th grade, she went to the same middle school I worked at, and took French. Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. However, the story takes place over a twenty-year period. And I get that this is a fairly 'domesticated' novel with most of the action happening in and around the kitchen, but I felt that the Central/South American setting was wasted. They are not. Which I guess is fine, because it boils down to a twee romance novel with a few fantastical magical happenings. The phrase like water for chocolate came from Mexico. After days of trying to access this movie, I give up. Trying to play this video has been extremely frustrating. and most of the symbolism is spelled out to you instead of developing and existing in its own right. There is much more to praise. 'Crafted' is perhaps the wrong word. The strong emotions that are portrayed in this film are of people living in Mexico at that time, are very tangible since they are treated sympathetically. Even so,the plot is fabulous and scenery is sublime. I can't tell you anything that hasn't been said before, other than I highly recommend reading the book and watching the movie. The water is boiling but not pouring over the pot. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 13, 2016. The ghost makes a brief appearance when Pedro gets burned and they use the bark remedy. Thoroughly entertaining story; brought me to love Magical Realism, Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2017. That largely has to do with her love for Pedro (Marco Leonardi) which her mother forbids it. My mind doesn't deal with techniques and tools and whatnot authors use, which is probably why I don't get poetry, but, what I do see of the techniques and tools, is heartbreaking at the same time happy. Every time I tried to play this movie, it crashed after 10 seconds or less. Sometimes there is a lack of depth to some situations and characters, especially Pedro who she is in love with. But they are never to marry. It has become a valued part of American literature. Please try again. But the narrative is boring, predictable and poorly written in my opinion. Pedro suddenly dies after experiencing passionate sex, presumably because he lit all the matches at once. Has to be one of my all time favorite books and I'm forever thankful the Spanish/French teacher I used to work with recommended the video which got me onto the book. When tradition prevents her from marrying the man she loves, a young woman discovers she has a unique talent for cooking. None of the characters were likable or memorable to me. As the book progresses, I don't feel he is worthy of her devotion. The control of tempo is excellent. Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2019. Watch as Tita discovers herself, learns life lessons and most importantly about passionate love. Tita and Pedro make love in a romantic atmosphere: at night, in a room full of silk-white linen and hundreds of burning candles. I loaned it to my aunt and told her it was an excellent book, but, she didn't care for it, which surprised me. The story brings out a typical Mexican home that strictly follows the traditions passed down by the forefathers.
